Roald Dahl Matilda Food Art

It has been a long time since I last took part in a bento hop with my fellow Bento Bloggers & Friends. For the benefit of those who are new to this, a bento hop is when a group of bento bloggers get together and create certain thematic lunches. Then we schedule to post them at the same time on our individual blogs and include a hop button. Readers can simply move and hop from one blog to the next to see all the lunches by clicking on the hop button. It's a great way for you to get many ideas related to a certain theme.

This is the third time I'm taking part in a Roald Dahl themed bento hop. You can check out my creations from previous years here. This year, I decided to make Matilda. Matilda is my second favourite book by Roald Dahl, my favourite is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We own a couple of Roald Dahl's books but not Matilda. The boys didn't want me to buy the book simply because it's about a girl. But they did read a copy of the book, which I borrowed from the library a few years ago.

This Mathilda food art was made out of ham and cheese wrap. The coloured wraps were soy wraps made from spinach, carrot and turmeric, the wraps were filled with ham and cheese. Mathilda's hair was made out of a toasted wrap and I used red cabbage for her dress.

I made this just before I took a one week bento break, as my boys were having their school holidays. I've to confess I was not happy with how this turned out, I can't really pin-point what is wrong, it's just different from what I had visualize. I was contemplating whether I should drop out of the bento hop as I would not be able to rush out another one in time. But in the end, I decided to still share it, since I already made it.

Willy Wonka Bento

September the 13th is Roald Dahl's birthday. In honor of the beloved author's birthday I'm joining my fellow Bento Bloggers & Friends to celebrate this occasion with a Roald Dahl Day blog hop. Be sure to click on the button at the end of this post and check out the next Roald Dahl bento. :)

Last year, we had a similar blog hop too and I made James and the Giant Peach, click HERE to check out my creations then. This year, I decided to make Willy Wonka, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favourite storybook when I was a child. It's also the first Roald Dahl book I bought for IT. He's very familiar with this book, as it has also been used as a textbook in his English class at school when he was in Primary 2. LT just started reading this book yesterday, thanks to this bento.

Willy Wonka was made from rice, coloured with a little ketchup. Other ingredients used to make him were aburaage, purple cabbage, cheese and nori. Wonka bar was made using rice, nori, cheese and red capsicum.

Side dishes for this bento were lemon chicken and sesame broccoli. I've also added in gobstopper and sour gummies. This has got to be one of my boys' favourite bento, thanks to the candies, lol. This lunch is packed in an EasyLunchboxes, so happy to finally own a set. :)

Roald Dahl Bento

Today is Roald Dahl Day! To celebrate this occasion, I'm joining my fellow Bento Bloggers & Friends in a blog hop. Be sure to click the link at the end of the post, and check out the next Roald Dahl bento. :)

I remembered reading Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I was a kid. It was one of my favourite book then, and I would read it over and over again. It's also the first Roald Dahl book I bought for IT, he enjoyed it too. My first thought was to make a Willy Wonka bento. However, I changed my mind and ended up making James and the Giant Peach instead.

James and the Giant Peach is used in IT's English lesson in School this year, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was used last year. :) The peach in the bento is rice mixed with steamed pumpkin, the leaf is cut out from egg sheet and the stalk is made from nori and cheese. James is rice mixed with a little ketchup and I used carrot for his hair. I packed grilled wings, grapes and strawberries in the other box.

I managed to find a spider, centipede and ladybug among my toppers, which I added in to represent some of the creatures in the book.

If you have read the book, you will know that the peach ended up on top of the Empire State Building.

Empire State Building is a nutella sandwich, the details are drawn in using white icing. And that is a real peach on top of it, lol. :)
