Domokun Bento

Domokun has been on my to do list for very long, I finally decided to make him today. Domokun is made out of inari sushi. Pretty fast making these, I think I will make him again soon. :)

The boys' lunch, inari sushi, teriyaki chicken and strawberries.

Domokun's mouth is made out of ham and cheese.

And their boxes for School.

Inari sushi, teriyaki chicken and grapes.

My dinner last night, rice with greens and teriyaki wings.

Lunch for me today, kept some of the teriyaki chicken I cooked for the boys and had it with my bread. Teriyaki chicken recipe at the end of this post.

Got these in the mail today, thanks to Sarah from Zoe's Lunchbox, she kindly helped me to buy these from the store and mailed them over. :)

1 chicken leg
11/2 tbsp mirin
11/2 tbsp soya sauce
2 tbsp sake
2 tsp sugar

  1. Mix all ingredients together except sugar and leave to marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat pan, pat chicken dry and put chicken skin side down on the pan. There is no need to add any oil.
  3. Pan fry both sides till golden brown.
  4. Wipe the pan clean, add in the marinade from #1 and sugar.
  5. Add in chicken, cook till the chicken is well glazed with the sauce.
  • You can also substitute with other chicken parts like wings and drums. Chicken breast is not recommended to be used for this.

Doraemon Bento

It's Monday again! Sign, where did my weekend go? Not the first time I've made Doraemon, this time it's a simplified version.

Blue portion of Doraemon is coloured with butterfly pea flower.

Other food are chicken balls stuffed with cheese, broccoli and strawberries.

I'm out of blue bread stash, thought of making a loaf again, but I spotted some purple bread in the bakery yesterday, so I bought a pack to try. The purple colour is due to black glutinous. Lol, I know Doreamon is not purple, but I thought this shade of purple is pretty close to blue, no? Lol, the boys must have thought otherwise, they aked me why is Doraemon purple. :P

Sandwich, with chicken ball and grapes for School.

My dinner from last Friday, bread pizza and greens. :)

Olympics Bento

It's the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics today! :) I am joining my fellow Bento Bloggers and Friends in a 2012 Olympics Blog Hop. So make sure you follow the button at the end of this post and hop around to check out everyone's great ideas. :)

Here's the Olympic lunch I made for my boys. :) My first thought was to make the Olympics mascots, googled for them, but sorry, I've to say I do not like what I saw. So, I've made my own mascots instead, lol. :p Brown bear is coloured with dark soya sauce and purple bunny is coloured with deco furi. The rest of the food are teriyaki chicken, broccoli(hidden behind the olympic board) and strawberries.

The Olympics board is made from bread. My original idea was to make the Olympics rings all out of bread as well, but my beetroot bread turned out yellow and I could not get my hands on charcoal bread. So, I've dyed egg white with natural colourings for the black and red rings (they turned out brown and pink though).

And the boys' Olympics snack boxes for School.

Sandwiches, with teriyaki chicken and grapes.

And my dinner last night, greens with cheese pasta and miso chicken. :)

Now, click on the picture above to take you to El Lunch de Mi Enamo and check out Laura's awesome creation. And keep hopping through from there. :)

Owl Bento

Just realised this is going to be post #294, so I think I will be holding my 300th post giveaway next Friday. :) Check back next week for details. :)

Owls for lunch, saw this onigiri version online, brown portion of rice coloured with just a teeny weeny bit of dark soya sauce. Ears are bread and branch was cut out from bread crust.

Served with five spice meatballs, asparagus rolls and strawberries.

Sandwich version of the owl for School. :)

With meatball and grapes.

My dinner last night, greens with pan fried meatballs and beef asparagus rolls. The boys had similar stuff for dinner, and for their lunch boxes today. I usually keep some marinated food from the night before and cook it in the morning for their lunch boxes.

Mame Goma Bento

Mame Goma hiding in inari for today. :) Quite a rush making these today, coz I woke up late. -_-

For the boys' lunch, inari sushi, with black pepper wings, broccoli, ebikko and strawberries.

Pink seal coloured with beetroot and yellow seal coloured with tumeric. Argh, forgot the blusher for their cheeks.

Inari sushi for School as well.

Packed with black pepper wings and grapes.

I've been using these bento boxes for the boys' dinner most of the time, even though what I cook is not Japanese fare. The size is just right for their usual rice with 3 side dishes. This was dinner from last night, rice with black pepper wings, cheddar baked salmon and stir fried willow sprouts.

This was my portion for dinner last night, just black pepper wings with greens.

My lunch today, more like breakfast huh? Kaya beetroot bread, with ham and sunny side up. Tried to bake some beetroot bread yesterday but still turned out yellow. Anyone have a recipe that will yield a pink coloured bread, using natural colouring agents? Please share with me if you do. :)

Panda Bento

Cheese pandas all done yesterday night using cutters, it's quite similar to this bunny one that I did a tutorial on, except I've swapped the bunny cutter with a bear cutter.

Pandas on multi-grained rice, with asparagus, pork rolls with ebikko, golden kiwis, strawberries and grapes.

I had wanted to make a full body panda out of rice but changed my mind last night, so I can wake up later today. :P Will attempt that another time.

And sandwiches for School. :)

With ebikko pork rolls and grapes.

My dinner last night, ebikko pork rolls with salad.

This was lunch today, salad with shaved ham and egg mayo. :)

Snoopy and Woodstock Bento

Feeling tired today,  and it's just the beginning of the week. :(  Anyway, life goes on. Made Snoopy and Woodstock out of quail eggs and corn respectively. Can you tell it's them? Lol, I hope so. :)

Char Siew fried rice for lunch, using multi-grained rice, hence the colour.

Added apples, corns and a hash brown for them.

And ham/cheese sammies for the boys to bring to School.

Packed with apples and hashbrown.

That's all for today, and now, I got to get back to my chores.

Racial Harmony Day Bento

It's Racial Harmony Day today, so I've made a bento of the four major races in Singapore. The boys aren't required to report in ethnic costume this year, but I think there'll be some activities in IT's School during recess. :)

The races are Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian. Can you spot them? :)

Cold soba for them, with prawns, golden kiwis and strawberries.

I packed their soba for School in the thermal flask.

And they also had prawns and grapes for School.

Curry beef stew for my dinner last night.

I've updated the piggy yakisoba post last week with a tuturial, go check it out if you are interested. :)

Spiderman Bento

Spiderman has been on my to do list for very long, and so are a lot of other characters, lol. :) Yes, my list seems to be never ending. Anyway, I finally muster up enough courage to do Spidey today. The chocolate decors and the spiders on cheese were all done yesterday.

I wasted a lot of time this morning on these 2 sets, because my nori kept breaking after I cut them. -_- I ran out out of time and was running late in sending LT to School, so I rushed through the set on the left.

Red rice coloured with beetroot. Other food in the box are nuggets, fries, broccoli and strawberries.

I never seem to make much improvement in my chocolate painting, I wonder whether I will ever master it, lol. Dun ask me why the chocolate looks uneven, I've no idea either. Pretty fast doing the chocolate painting though, and as usual, this was impressive enough for my boys.

My pokey faced Spidey and badly written words. -_- IT has been asking me for fries and nuggets, so I've packed them today, with their usual sandwiches and grapes.

IT has an excursion to the National Museum today, packed an extra bag of junk food for him, lol. :P

My bento pal, Yenn, has just opened an online store selling bento supplies. Do check out her site, Bento Mama Supplies, and yes, she does ships worldwide. :)
