Bear Cupcake and Cookie

I was looking through my cupcake cases the other day, LT saw them and asked me to bake him some cupcakes. He said he wanted me to pack them into his lunchbox so he can have them for recess at school. I don't usually bake on school days, but since he requested, how could I say say no.

I ended up baking some cookies as well, to decorate the cuppies.

IMG_3179
The cuppies were just plain vanilla ones, which I frosted with frosty whip.

The bear cookies I made. I made a few more other designs and took step-by-step photos on two of the designs, will try to update the recipe and tutorial next week.

Hello Kitty Picnic Bento

I'm sure most of you are aware of the news of the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370. Saddened by this piece of news over the weekend. :( My uncle, who lives in Kuala Lumpur, is a flight attendant with Malaysian Airlines. Thankfully he was not onboard this flight. Our thoughts and prayers towards all those affected by this unfortunate event. Let's hope for the best.

IMG_2950
This Hello Kitty picnic bento was for my boys and me. I made this two weeks ago, hubby was away fishing overnight in Malaysia over that weekend.

IMG_2946
This tier was packed with onigiris and fruits. Not sure if you can tell, but I was rushing through this towards the end, as I was running late. The middle row of Kitties were not done nicely.

IMG_2965
This tier was packed with inari Kitty sushi, broccoli, lettuce, fried prawns and tonkatsu.

IMG_2963
Ingredients used to make Hello Kitty were rice, nori, egg sheet and capsicum.

Animals in Teacups

I saw this set of uber cute coffee cup animals bento picks, that comes complete with a circus case. I was tempted to get a set but eventually convinced myself I don't need them. Maybe I'll change my mind next time, I can be really fickle-minded when it comes to shopping.

IMG_2912
Inspired by that set of kawaii bento picks, I decided to make onigiri animals in teacups. From left to right, doggy, bunny, bear and kitty.

IMG_2907
The animals are not difficult to make. They are made from rice, coloured ones have deco furi mixed in. I used nori for the details, doggy's ears are cut out from aburagge.

IMG_2903
Served these animals onigiris with grilled chicken, broccoli, grapes and srawberries.

IMG_2916
The animals are quite small, as the teacups are mini-sized ones. Anything mini always seems extra kawaii.

Octopus Sushi

The octopus sushi I'm sharing today, was modified by a similar decor sushi I saw on Pinterest.

IMG_2775
The pink rice was coloured using a sushi vinegar seasoning. The seasoning will turn the rice pink.

IMG_2772
Served the sushi for lunch with pan fried gyozas and lettuce. The boys had more gyozas and sushi than what is shown in the photo, they have a much bigger appetite than that.

IMG_2776
A closer look at the octopus sushi. I should have made some sausage octopus as well.

Hello Kitty Sandwich and Rice Roll

I had wanted to post up the tutorial for these Hello Kitty sandwich rolls last week, but I was busy revising with my boys for their upcoming tests. After all the revising, I just wanted to rest at night, instead of doing up a blog post.

IMG_2937
Very easy Hello Kitty sandwich rolls, can't remember where the idea was from, saw them a long time back somewhere, and had always wanted to make them.

IMG_2934
I made these for snacks, but they are great for lunch too, just have to add in more food. :)

IMG_3082
I also made rice version of the kitties.

IMG_3084
Sharing how I made them below.

IMG_2917
Slice off bread crusts. You can flatten the bread with a rolling pin if you like, this helps to prevent the bread from breaking when you roll. I usually skip this step, as I prefer a fluffier looking sandwich roll.

IMG_2919
I spread some mayo and used ham for the fillings. You can use other fillings like tuna, jam, etc. Roll up the bread slowly.

IMG_2922
Wrap the bread using cling wrap, leave it aside for a while, so the roll can hold its shape. Cut out 2 triangles from bread for Hello Kitty ears. If you are wondering what to do with the bread after cutting the ears out, you can check out my old post HERE for some ideas.

IMG_2923
If needed, slice off the side of the sandwich rolls to fit into your bento box.

IMG_2924
Attached on ears using pasta. Dab on some mayo to help the eyes and whiskers stick. I used the puncher in the picture above to punch out the eyes. The whiskers are cut out using scissors.

IMG_2928
Use an oval cutter to punch out nose from egg sheet and stick it onto the bread with some mayo. You can also use corn for the nose. I used bento picks for Kitty's bows.

IMG_3102
If you do not have a bow pick, you can also use 2 heart shaped sprinkles for the bow. Or cut out 2 heart shapes from ham, capsicum, strawberries, etc.

IMG_3536
For the rice version, you can either use a mould to shape your rice if you have one, or use cling wrap to shape your rice. I misplaced my rice mould, this picture is actually 'stolen' from one of my old tutorial post. The rest of the steps to make the Hello Kitty rice roll is the same as the sandwich roll.

IMG_2939
Hope the step-by-step helps, try making these Kitties and pack them in your bento. :)
