Totoro Soba

I saw this photo of Totoro made using soba on Pinterest last week, love it so much that I immediately recreate it the following day. I'm sure some of you might have seen that same photo before too.


Here's what I did, pretty similar to the original, except I added in whiskers and used bread for the tummy.


Soba is one of my boys' favourite food. For lunch last Friday, they had their soba with breaded shishamo. :)


We had pizza for dinner last Friday. There's chicken, shaved ham, broccoli, pineapples and egg on this pizza. I cheated by using wraps for the base. If you want to do the same, remember to bake the wraps for a few minutes on both sides before spreading the sauce and adding toppings. That way, the pizza won't turn soggy and will remain crisp after being baked.


I also made this fusion version using kimchi and pork, give this a try if you love kimchi. :)

Penguin Sushi

I made penguin sushi for my boys'lunch last Thursday and received some request for a tutorial. I managed to take some step by step photos but before I share them, I would like to mention once again that I'm not making my deco sushi in the proper way. I'm happy to share how I made them but I do not want to give the wrong impression that my way is the correct way of making sushi.

I cooked cheesy baked chicken for my boys' lunch that day. I simply cooked chicken with milk and the leftover cheese cut outs I've accumulated. Then, I added shredded cheese and panko on top and baked it in the oven.


Cheese, corn and nori were used for the penguin's details.


I had these sushi for my breakfast that day. Sushi was filled with spinach, egg and kanimi. I've been lazy these days and just rolling the sushi with my hands, without a mat. -_-


To make the penguin sushi, cook around one cup of rice and separate rice into two portions. Roll one portion into a tube using cling wrap, compress the rice as you do this. Wrap rice with seaweed after you are done.


Mix the other portion of rice with grinded black sesame. There are ready grinded packs of black sesame sold in some stores. I just used up mine and could not find them in the marts near me. If you can't find the grinded kind, you can grind them yourself using a food processer or a pestle. Mix in the grinded black sesame a little at a time, till you are happy with the colour of the rice.


Spread the black sesame rice evenly on a sheet of nori, adding one more layer of rice between the two white arrows indicated in the picture above. Place the white tube of rice on top, roll up and compress your rice. I just roll up using with my hands but a sushi mat is recommended.


Slice up your sushi with a sharp and wet knife. I have made girls and Totoro out of these sushi before too. Click HERE and HERE to see.


Cut out ovals for mouth. The picture shows the puncher I used for the eyes.


Attach on corn with pasta and dab on decor gel for the cheeks.


And the penguin sushi are done. Sorry, I know I did not do a good job explaining, but hope the photos help you to understand how I made them. :)

Panda Cheese Bread Bun

IT's exams are finally over and we are now counting down to School holidays! :) For today, I'm sharing some bread rolls which I decorated last Wednesday.


These are sausage buns, decorated with pandas. Pandas are made from cheese and nori.


My boys also had nuggets, golden kiwis and strawberries. :)


I also decorated my sausage buns. These are really easy and fast to make, flower and bird cut outs are done with cutters.

One pack contains 8 different designs. It also comes with a box to keep the cutters.


I used the bear cutter in the set to cut out cheese and added on details with nori and ham. I made these on Tuesday, added the words 'ganbatte' to encourage IT for his exams this week. He still has one more paper next Monday, so we will be busy revising this weekend. -_-


Pasta was done aglio olio style with lots of garlic. There was also chicken patties, grapes and strawberries in the bento.


I used the same cutter for their snack boxes. This time I made a welcome signboard instead.


I've another set of creations using this cutters, will share them next Monday. :)

Panda Onigiri Bento

A quick post today, sharing some simple panda onigiris I made for my boys' lunch on Monday. :)


Something fast to whip up on a lazy Monday morning, lol. Just shape rice into triangular onigiris using cling wrap. Cut seaweed with a pair of scissors and add on details with a nori puncher. I got the inpiration for these from a bento product I saw online. Check out the product link at the end of the post if you are interested. :)


Served with meat patties, broccoli, apples, golden kiwis and strawberries. :)


Curry chicken for breakfast. I've a habit of keeping curry chicken from dinner the night before and cook them with noodles the following day. :P
