Minion Somen & Toast

We are still stuck at home this weekend again, except for going out for their enrichment classes and our meals. IT still has Higher Chinese paper next week, it is not stressful for me though, as I don't have high expectations for this paper. I don't mind him dropping off this paper if his results are bad, but so far he has been doing better in this than his normal Chinese paper, it bewilders me too, lol. I rather he ace his normal Chinese paper instead. Since I've time at home, I'm trying to get a few draft posts up and hopefully I can clear more of my backlog.

Back to making some noodles food art after a hiatus, because I have not been cooking soba or somen for sometime. I don't know exactly why too, I just did not feel like cooking them. It was only when LT asked me to cook cold noodles again, I begun making them recently. I love how this Minions somen turned out,  sometimes they don't turn out the way I visualise it, but this is one of those that turned out exactly like what I had in mind.

IMG_7346
I've mentioned it before, I love how easy and fast it is to create noodles food art. I've not done any tutorial on how I made this, but you can take a look at two of my past noodles food art tutorial. I did a tutorial on how I did My Melody and sheep using noodles before.

IMG_7350
Ingredients used for this were yellow somen noodles, nori, cheese and cucumber. Chopped spring onions are optional but they do complete the whole look and goes well with the cold noodles too.

IMG_5642
Another Minon food art I made, this one was for myself. This is Minion Bob with his teddy bear.

IMG_5636
Bob was made out of scrambled eggs, cheese, nori and ham. The ham was coloured blue by dipping in butterfly/blue pea water. The teddy bear was made out of toasted bread, I cut it out first before toasting it brown.

IMG_5629
I ate this for lunch, not breakfast though, added in grilled mushrooms, asparagus and tomatoes at the side. :)

Halloween Soba & Burger

I'm back with more Halloween creations. I can sleep later today because my boys only have school on friday this week.  However, we have to do exam revisions as their exams will start next week. IT is a lot more independent and quite confident this round (though I've to remind him not to be too complacent), so I'm finally focusing more on guiding LT with his revisions.

IMG_7221
Here's the first set of Halloween food art I'm sharing today. Frankenstein and ghost cold soba. Ghost is actually made out of somen, it's thinner than soba.

IMG_7217
I served them cold with a dipping sauce. It has been a long time since I last cook cold soba for my boys. LT was asking for them the other day, so I decided to serve them some, but not before I decorated them, lol.

IMG_7208
Ingredients used for the ghost were nori, ham, orange bell pepper and cucumber.

IMG_7210
Ingredients used for Frankie were nori, cheese and cucumber.

IMG_7320
Another Halloween food art I made was this Halloween burger set. Had a hiccup with this one, this cucumber Frankenstein was actually a last minute change. I had wanted to make Frankenstein out of spinach soup instead, but I tried a new recipe that day and the soup was not thick  enough, and I had problem placing the ingredients on it.

IMG_7311Jack o'lantern is made using a slice of cheese over a meat patty, you can take a look at this tutorial here, I used the same method to mould the cheese onto the patty. I used a knife to add on some indention on the cheese so it looks more like a pumpkin. And finally, the little ghost is made using quail egg.

Sleeping Snoopy Somen

What a sleepy Monday, I had problem getting out of bed early again after the 4 days break from school. -_- Today's food art totally depict what I had wanted to do this morning.

IMG_9872
There you go, Snoopy sleeping blissfully on top of his house. I was so tempted to take a nap this afternoon, but had tons of stuff to clear, so I did not do so eventually.

IMG_9881
Snoopy was made from somen, nori and cheese. Snoopy's house was made from ume somen, which comes in a pretty pink shade, details were done using boiled kombu. For the side dish, I fried some chicken cutlets.

IMG_0032
Another sleeping Snoopy I made, this one was made from just somen, nori and cheese.

IMG_0036
Served this with some grilled salmon topped with ebiko and mayonnaise.

Instagram Soba & Steam Cake

I have been rather inactive on social medias in recent years, namely Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram. I hardly check Facebook unless someone tags or messages me. I only share links to my new blog post on Twitter and Google+, I don't check them at all. I am slightly more active on Instagram, as I love looking at photos, but I don't check it very often as well.

IMG_9509
An Instagram food art has been on my to-do list for a long time. I've always wanted to do a bread and rice version, but I've seen plenty of those around, so I decided to do the Instagram logo using soba instead.

IMG_9502
As usual, soba is served cold, with a dipping sauce. I air-fried some wings for the sides, just rubbed on some sea-salt and cajun seasoning before dumping them in the fryer.

IMG_9515
I used a mix of soba and somen here, the other details were done using nori, cheese, capsicum and purple cabbage.

IMG_9744
I've been experimenting with one of my steam cake recipe that does not use pancake mix. This was one of the cakes I made using that recipe. I've updated the recipe and post, please click HERE to see.

IMG_9739
I won't be sharing the recipe for this, as it's not nicely done, I added on too much cocoa powder for the brown batter and too much charcoal powder for the black batter.

Snoopy & Woodstock Somen

I've been so busy everyday since school started. Sorry, probably won't be blogging much this month, not sure if I'll blog more often after that, I kind of like this current blogging routine of around two posts per week, lol. Here's a slightly longer post for today to make up for my lack of blogging.

IMG_9209
I mentioned previously that I love using somen/soba to create food art, as they don't take up too much of my time. This time, I decorated my boys' cold somen dinner as Snoopy. Somen was served cold with soba dipping sauce. I also cooked teriyaki meat patties for them to go with the somen.

IMG_9208
Ingredients used to create Snoopy were cheese and nori. If you interested in making this, you can click HERE to check out a tutorial I did for My Melody somen, the ways to make both are similar.

IMG_9241
I went on to make Woodstock somen on another day. This time I cooked chicken and carrots for the side dish.

IMG_9245
Woodstock was made using yellow egg somen, the outlines were all done using boiled kombu.

snoopy
Sharing these Snoopy and Woodstock donuts from Mister Donut in Japan. I wanted to share them last year in another post but forgot to do so. These were their Peanuts characters Christmas edition last year.

snoopy1
These special edition donuts were pretty tasty, but my all time favourite is still their glazed "pon de ring". If you look at the upper photo, you can see a blur picture of the "pon de ring" at the background. I could not find a clearer picture in my camera, my only clearer picture is a selfie of me with my "pon de ring', which I can't share as I no longer share our personal photos.

Panda Somen

Rather unmotivated to blog since it's the school holidays, lol. Had wanted to blog about LT's birthday, but I've yet to sort through the photos, so here's a fast post about an earlier somen lunch I made instead.

IMG_3768
An easy panda somen for for my boys' lunch. I actually could not decide on which panda design to make, finally settled on this, but I think I will be making more versions of panda somen next time.

IMG_3775
I usually have a stash of gyozas in my freezer, pan-fried some to go with the somen.

IMG_3779
Panda details were done using nori, cheese and ham. The bamboo the panda is holding onto is a stalk of blanched asparagus.

Kiiroitori Somen

I love making food art using cold somen/soba, the creations are usually quite fast and easy to do, and my boys love eating their noodles cold. Whenever I'm feeling lazy, I'll always look to using somen/soba for food art.

IMG_3610
A Kiiroitori somen, which I made a while back. I used carrots for his beak and stacked nori on cheese for the other parts.

IMG_3608
Grilled garlic miso wings using my air fryer, to go with the somen. I like using miso to marinade chicken and fish, but I've never added garlic together with miso before. I happened to come across these garlic miso wings from Just One Cookbook, and thought I'll give it a try. They turned out really good, do hop over to Nami's site if you need the recipe.

IMG_3613
You can also try creating this using noodles or pasta. :)

Frozen Movie Olaf Somen

We love the Disney movie, Frozen. The song 'Let it go' from the movie is so popular, I've heard so many renditions of it. The song is very nice, but I hear it so often, I'm pretty sick of it now, lol.

IMG_3321
My boys' favourite character in Frozen, no prize for guessing correctly, is none other than Olaf.

IMG_3326
Olaf was made using somen, cheese, nori and carrots. His hands were made using grape stems and can't be eaten. I guess you can if you want to, but it will probably taste awful, lol. -_- The somen was eaten cold with a dipping sauce.

IMG_3328
This was quite easy to make, my boys asked me to make Olaf again, will be making another Frozen bento soon.
