Halloween Pull-Apart Bread Bun

Before I proceed with the chigiri pan I made for Halloween, I'll like to share about my bento book giveaway over at Just One Cookbook. My friend, Nami has also uploaded a video of how she did one of the recipe in my bento book. Go and check it out. That's not all, if you win, in addition to my cookbook, you can also receive $100 worth of goodies from BentoUSA. Giveaway is open internationally. Good luck!

IMG_7633
This Halloween chigiri pan shall be my last Halloween creation for this year. The Halloween characters I made were Jack(from Nightmare before Christmas), Jack o'lantern, black cat, ghost and Frankenstein.

IMG_7637
Sorry, I don't have any recipe to share for this, I'm still need more trials with making different coloured dough. I used matcha for Frankie and charcoal powder for the black cat. I was out of carrot powder and orange food colouring, so I used a mix of pink and yellow food colouring for the  Jack o'lantern. The colours ended up a little patchy and too vibrant for my liking. I need to get more vegetable powder when I go to Japan during the holiday, they work the best.

IMG_7647
Not sure if you noticed, Jack is slightly browned, because I was a little too late in covering him with aluminium foil. I remembered later for the little ghost, so he's really white, lol.

Totoro & Minion Halloween

Another Halloween post to update for today, using characters my boys and I like. I'm planning to make one last Halloween creation this week, and will try to get it up on the blog by friday. Hopefully there'll be no hiccups.

IMG_7441
Totoro cooking up some curry for our dinner, lol. I got the inspiration for this Totoro Halloween food art from a photo of a Totoro Halloween display set I saw online. I simplified the actual display though, cut down to two Totoros and left out some details.

IMG_7444
Totoro was made using rice, mixed with grinded black sesame, cheese and nori. I used fried pasta sticks for the whiskers. Can you spot the pot of butter chicken curry at the back? I cooked that using the premix from Dancing Chef, totally fuss-free and it tasted yummy. :)

IMG_7452
The mini cauldron is totally edible too, the cauldron itself was made using rice and nori, and I added in some butter chicken curry into it as well.

IMG_7590
The other character I made for Halloween was this vampire minion. When I saw this character a few months ago when the movie was just released, the first thought that went to my mind was that it's perfect for Halloween. I immediately noted it down in my list of to-do creations, so I will remember to craft it out nearer to Halloween.

IMG_7589
Minion was made from rice mixed with mashed egg yolks, cheese, nori and red cabbage. His hands are supposed to be purple, but I was lazy to colour another batch of rice purple, hence I just left it as yellow.

IMG_7593
You can't really tell, but he's actually lying on a bed of chicken stir-fried with bell peppers. The other side dishes were broccoli and tamagoyaki. :)

Halloween Soba & Burger

I'm back with more Halloween creations. I can sleep later today because my boys only have school on friday this week.  However, we have to do exam revisions as their exams will start next week. IT is a lot more independent and quite confident this round (though I've to remind him not to be too complacent), so I'm finally focusing more on guiding LT with his revisions.

IMG_7221
Here's the first set of Halloween food art I'm sharing today. Frankenstein and ghost cold soba. Ghost is actually made out of somen, it's thinner than soba.

IMG_7217
I served them cold with a dipping sauce. It has been a long time since I last cook cold soba for my boys. LT was asking for them the other day, so I decided to serve them some, but not before I decorated them, lol.

IMG_7208
Ingredients used for the ghost were nori, ham, orange bell pepper and cucumber.

IMG_7210
Ingredients used for Frankie were nori, cheese and cucumber.

IMG_7320
Another Halloween food art I made was this Halloween burger set. Had a hiccup with this one, this cucumber Frankenstein was actually a last minute change. I had wanted to make Frankenstein out of spinach soup instead, but I tried a new recipe that day and the soup was not thick  enough, and I had problem placing the ingredients on it.

IMG_7311Jack o'lantern is made using a slice of cheese over a meat patty, you can take a look at this tutorial here, I used the same method to mould the cheese onto the patty. I used a knife to add on some indention on the cheese so it looks more like a pumpkin. And finally, the little ghost is made using quail egg.

Halloween Sausage Octopus

Finally started making more Halloween creations this week. Before I continue with today's post, I'll like to share about my bento book giveaway over at BentoLunch.net. If you are from US/Canada, please check out and join the giveaway. Good luck! :)

IMG_7243
Halloween sausage octopus bread buns I made for my boys to bring for recess. Yes, they are still bringing bentos to school but those are usually not decorated. I cling wrap these after taking a photo and pack them for their bento box the following day.

IMG_7251
Can you guess what these Octopus are dressing up as? From left to right - witch, mummy and bat. I quite like how they turned out. I also had this idea of making sausage fingers bread buns with ketchup. But I did not do it in the end, I'm still more into making cute stuff, gruesome stuff seems more difficult for me. Maybe I'll try it next year.

IMG_7224
I still have quite a few Halloween ideas, not sure if I'll be able to get them done in time. Meanwhile, you can look at my past Halloween creations here, I've quite a lot accumulated over the years. :)

Hotel Transylvania 2 Food Art

It's that time of the year for making Halloween bentos again. I've made many Halloween bentos during the past few years, you can check out all my past creations over here. I probably won't be making that many this year, as I'm don't blog that often like I used to these days, and I am afraid I won't be able to update in time if I make too many.

My first Halloween creation for this year is about the upcoming movie Hotel Transylvania 2. I'm joining a Hotel Transylvania 2 blog hop with my fellow bento friends, so please remember to click on the graphic at the end of the post for more Hotel Transylavania 2 inspired lunches.
IMG_6777
I love the new character in Transylvnia 2, Dennis, the son of Johnny and Mavis. Dennis looks so cute in the trailer, so of course I chose to craft him. I made his grandpa, Dracula too, because I like the posters showing both of them together.

IMG_6800
This is actually lunch for two, LT ate the Dracula rice with with his soup, and IT gets to eat his soup with Dennis pasta(There's another bowl of soup not in the picture.). IT likes to eat pasta and LT likes to eat rice. They don't usually get to choose at home, so both would just eat whatever I serve on the table. The soup is chicken vegetable soup which went well with both rice and pasta.

IMG_6783
To make Dracula, I used rice(coloured with ketchup), nori, cheese, ham(coloured blue by soaking in butterfly/blue pea water) and red cabbage.

IMG_6786
To make Dennis, I used spiral pasta (cooked in tomato based sauce), ham (eye portion was coloured blue using butterfly/blue pea flower waer), cheese and nori. I think Dennis still looks like he can do with more hair, I should have added on more pasta, lol.

Now, are you ready for more spooky lunch ideas, just click on the graphic above, and hop over to Bunches O Lunches, and see what awesome lunch ideas Shannon has for you. :)

Mummy Snoopy Bento

I did not have time for bentos or blogging due to the exams. I did not feel like making any as well, as marking and going through my boys' revision work always spoils my mood. -_- So happy that it's finally over today, and we can put our books aside for the year. I can't wait for the school holidays and our year end trip. :)

Wednesday Addams Bento

It's so hard to wake up so early again today after the break. Doing revisions with my boys and marking their papers the past few days is giving me a headache. I can't wait for their exams to be over, have to hang in till next tuesday. Ganbatte!

Graveyard Pasta & Toast

My boys only have school for today, it's holiday for the rest of this week. Not really a holiday for them, as they have exams next week, so they will be studying instead. They are still happy to be off from school. And I'm looking forward to sleeping in, I hate waking up early. :P

Vampire & Grim Reaper Bento

Daddy is in Nagoya for a work trip now, he went a day earlier and took a side trip to Kyoto. How I wish we could all go but exams are coming, so I'm stuck in Singapore doing revisions with my boys instead. -_- He'll be back tomorrow, waiting for him to come back with my stuff, asked him to get me something for my bentos. :)

Pumpkin, Ghost & Skull Sushi

I'm sharing Halloween deco sushi for today, ideas are all from a deco sushi book.

IMG_9443\
Pumpkin and ghost sushi, which my boys had for lunch. They love sushi because they like dipping their rice in soya sauce. -_- They are huge fans of salmon sashimi as well, for the same reason, lol.

IMG_9439
I coloured my pumpkin sushi with steamed mashed pumpkin. The other ingredients used for the pumpkin sushi were japanese cucumber and kamaboko.

IMG_9449
There were no instructions in the book on how to roll these ghost sushi, but since only the ghost hands needed to be rolled with the sushi, I did managed to figure it out.

IMG_9462
These skull sushi were done on another day. The pink rice was coloured with sakura denbu and the grey rice was coloured with grinded black sesame seeds.

IMG_9460
I made some Halloween sushi last year too, click HERE to check them out.
